LEGENDARY H.S BASKETBALL COACH BOB HURLEY TO SPEAK AT N.A. BOYS SUMMER CAMP
Hall Of Famer to Address Boys On Friday
North Arlington (July 12, 2011) Bob Hurley Sr. the legendary Hall of Fame basketball coach for St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, will be speaking that the North Arlington Youth Center’s boys basketball camp on Friday, July 15 at 10 a.m.
The coach will address the boys at the North Arlington High School gym on Ridge Road.
The Youth Center contracted this year with St. Anthony’s coaches to run a one week camp for boys from grades 5 through 9, said center director Michael Kraft.
Ben Gamble, the top assistant at the national high school powerhouse St. Anthony’s ran the camp. Hurley will visit the camp on Friday to give a motivational speech to the youngsters.
Hurley has amassed 26 state championships and more than 1,000 wins in 39 years as a coach, creating a national powerhouse at the Jersey City school. On February 2, 2011, Hurley became the tenth coach in high school history to win 1,000 games. In 2010, he was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame.
“It’s a thrill to have Bob Hurley in our town and addressing our boys, said Kraft.
The camp attracted 40 boys this year and was open to boys from Lyndhurst and Kearny. Kraft said the opportunity to work with top notch high school coaches has meant a lot to boys.
“The boys recognized from day one – when they had to do a 12 minute conditioning drill — that they were going to work hard and get the best instruction they can get. When you can bring in the top teachers in the nation for high school basketball it’s a real thrill,” said Kraft.
Kraft said Youth Center is hoping to operate the camp with St. Anthony coaches next year. The one week camp cost $85 per student.
