JOINT SEWER COMMISSION RECEIVES $1 MILLION FOR BOROUGH SEWER UPGRADES
The borough will receive substantial upgrades to its sewer system
thanks to a $1 million grant given to the North Arlington –Lyndhurst
Joint Sewer Commission by the New Jersey meadowlands commission
today.
The funding will allow the borough to install new pumps and make other
improvements to the sewer system that will allow the NJMC to transport leachate from the meadowlands landfills to the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission.
Gary Burns, secretary to the Joint Meeting, who lobbied for the grant,
said the money will wipe out a $750,000 bond the borough approved last year to make improvements to the sewerage system.
“The grant will save taxpayers the expense of having to pay $750,000
to upgrade the sewer pumping station,” said Burns
Council President Richard Hughes, also a member of the Joint Meeting
called the grant, “a significant contribution from the NJMC to helping
clean up the Meadowlands and prepare for redevelopment of the area.”
Hughes said the sewer pumps are old and in need of constant repair.
“There has been a need for new pumps for some time now and I am glad that we will finally get the new equipment we need at no cost to the local taxpayers and end the costly temporary upgrades that have been going on for too many years.”
Mayor Peter Massa said he welcomed the grant, saying; “it’s long
overdue that we get these improvements to the sewer pumping system.”
